# Sync hardware clock to system clock
カテゴリ: /server/Dan Small Linux
There's a command to sync hardware clock to system clock:

hwclock --systohc

With the combination with "ntpdate", I may be able to adjust the time every reboot of the system.

# bind error -- forwarding
カテゴリ: /server/Dan Small Linux
The DNS (bind) daemon occasionally starts belching out:

sysquery: no addrs found for root NS (a.ROOT-SERVERS.NET)

to /var/log/message in an awfully high frequency. Once it happened, this might have consumed system memory causing the bind and other daemons to hang. I had dns trouble three times within a couple of months. /var/log/message is revised frequently enough for me to miss the above repeating lines, so I had no idea until now. I think I've finally isolated it!

This was an error when bind tried to resolve a name by contacting to the ROOT. In the named.conf, I let bind "forward only" the provider's address.

Today, I modified "options" in named.conf like:

options { directory "/etc/bind";
forward only;
forwarders{ [provider's name server IP];
};
};

# Windows VIsta password expiration
カテゴリ: /what's up
Windows vista has six versions. Home Basic and Home Premium have some limitation in user control, some of which are really question. One example is that Home Editions force the user to change his/her login password within every 42 days of period. The other version allow the administrator to set the password expiration from control panel. But Home Editions don't.

It is crazy to force the home user to change password this frequently. I searched around the internet and finally found the method to set the expiration to "Unlimited".

1. Open start menu
2. Type cmd in white line (”Start Search”) area
3. Right click on cmd (at top) and click Run as administrator.
4. Type net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited and press Enter.
This will stop password expiration in vista.
Close the command prompt window,
when you get “The command completed successfully” message.

That is it. "net accounts" command works for all accounts on the PC. "net user 'username'" command shows the individual setting.

There are several hidden folders on the DVD. To open the installer package, open Terminal and type:

open "/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/"

Then reboot is not necessary to install. OSInstall.mpkg is the target file to double click on.

problem in detecting AFP protocol. Finder finds a Mac as a PC.
3. The sound doesn't work

4. Remote Screen access causes kernel panic
> Resolved by D945GCLF2 package
5. It never launches without BOOT-146 (EFI emulator) CD

# sleep becomes fine
カテゴリ: x86
I flashed the BIOS of D945GCLF to 0140. Now sleep is working alright. LAN driver from Realtek as well, was installed and functioning now. The OSX Server is recognized as a PC on the new LAN port. That's the strange thing remained.

# D945GCLF is now working
カテゴリ: x86
In the dream of OSx86 on D945GCLF, the system is now working and successfully resolution of screen became changeable. The display was also recognized. Sleep seems working, although, unfortunately, the power supply doesn't sleep.

At first, I installed all kexts included in the D945GCLF2_boot_132.iso and rebooted. I found that the audio became functional but the screen resolution was still the same. I tried dsdt patcher but nothing happened. I tried installing kexts and dsdt.aml by UOI selecting Intel D945GCNL mobo and rebooted. No differences in result.

I looked into the system BIOS and changes the aperture size from 256 to 128. This time, I got kernel panic. I turned the aperture size back to 256 and reboot. Then, the resolution was back to 1024x768 and the menu display's the monitor's name and multiple resolutions, finally.

The network adaptor showed a strange behavior not obtaining a right address by DHCP. And every time I reboot the PC, I get an error about USB consuming too much power.

I replaced dsdt.aml by running dsdt patcher and reboot again. Finally, it got a right IP address by DHCP.

It is partially mysterious that the system suddenly became functioning fine. I suspect there was something wrong with the BIOS and changing value of the parameter might make the everything flow. God only knows.

# Universal OSx86 Installer
カテゴリ: x86
I found Universal OSx86 Installer from the same organization as the author of DSDT Patcher. The package includes a very organized manual and the tool itself is well designed. In fact, I successfully changed the default screen resolution to 1280x1024 from standard 1024x768.

However, the graphic chip has not been controlled correctly. It doesn't recognize the monitor.

There are many mobo names listed in their plugin menu, which enable the appropriate install for each hardware condition. D945GCLF is not listed unfortunately. But I think it's a matter of time until the plugin package will be ready because it's a major mobo. I'm just crossing fingers.

# progress in vanilla
カテゴリ: x86
I've got a little progress in my D945GCLF OSX dream. After iATKOS failed, I reinstalled the retail Leopard by using the boot-146 CD. This time, I installed PC EFI v9 on the same PATA hard disk. "boot" and "Extra" folder were created in root directory. I copied "Extension" folder of boot CD, into "Extra" in HD. Then, selected the HD in the "Startup Disk". Then I restarted without boot CD inserted. Come on! Yeah, it successfully started OS X!

I updated the OS to 10.5.6. Fine. I copied some .kext's from someone which are said to be compatible to GMA950 graphic chip by using Kext Helper application and also copied DSDT.aml, which is distributed with the kext's, to the root directory. The rebooting resulted system hang-up with just showing a grey apple logo mark. I went back with boot CD and deleted the DSDT.aml. The system came up alright.

Now, only #5 of the left issues was resolved. To organize the process of OS boot up, leaving a memo below:

1. PC loads BIOS and knows hardware information.
2. BIOS program looks for MBR to know where the first block to read.
3. In the MBR, single partition is defined and the BIOS read the GUID partition table.
4. Bootloader "boot" gets read first and this is actually EFI emulator.
5. "boot" looks for DSDT.aml and "Extra" folder (in initrc.img on boot-CD) to get hardware information and to load appropriate drivers.
6. "boot" remount the startup disk and the final OS gets blessed.

I'm still not confident about the above understandings.

# iATKOS 5i
カテゴリ: x86
http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=110282&st=143

Reading through the above article, I tried iATKOS 5i. It was not successful and couldn't see other resolution than 1024x768. I don't think I fully understand how the OS boots up. I discovered there is a BIOS menu I can choose for booting: normal or advance. The exact meaning I don't know. Need more study.

# Intel D945GCLF
カテゴリ: x86
I'm dreaming to install Leopard on D945GCLF. By using BOOT-146 (some variation of BOOT-132 maybe), I successfully installed Leopard form the retail DVD. But there remain several issues left:
1. The resolution is stick to 1024x768 by kexts for GMA950
2. The LAN doesn't work
3. The sound doesn't work
4. Remote Screen access causes kernel panic
5. It never launches without BOOT-146 (EFI emulator) CD
6. Doesn't sleep at all
7. Shutdown works but reboot doesn't

I want to dream installing iATKOS instead working on current installation.

# 16080 had gone finally
カテゴリ: /server/OS X Server
By my further investigation, I finally discovered the config file called "blog.properties" in /Library/Tomcat/blojsom_root/webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF//. There are two entries:
blog-base-url=http://xxx.xxx.xxx:16080/
blog-url=http://xxx.xxx.xxx:16080/weblog/

I deleted both 16080s and make the browser reload the page. It worked OK. No need to reload the server service.

This must be an error in coding of Mac OS X server. 16080 in this file should be taken off when the administrator unmarked the check box of "Performance Cache".

# The Who at Yokohama Arena
カテゴリ: /what's up
On 14th, I was at Yokohama Arena to see The Who. It was since 2004 when they appeared on Rock Odyssey festival at the International Stadium of Yokohama, for me to see them playing live!

Total 19 songs were played. It was very solid rather than wild. Zak Starkey was impressive as always, however, Pino's base solo on My Generation sounded indistinctive and blur. It reminded me that John Entwistle was entirely lost and renewed the fact, he was a lead guitarist in The Who.

The show ended with very sad song: Tea and Theatre. I felt like they were telling their last words to the audiences. The live was totally great, though.

# Time Zone
カテゴリ: /server/Dan Small Linux
When the DSL boots up, knoppix-autoconfig, dsl-config and bootlocal.sh are sequentially executed. Initial environmental values are set in knoppix-autoconfig and dhcp runs. In this process, resolv.conf seems to be modified. The command "/sbin/pump" obtains the info from DHCP server.

Time Zone is set by which language was selected prior process. If $LANGUAGE was not set, this script set it to "us".

By replacing US/Eastern by Asia/Tokyo in "us" case, the system should be set to Tokyo Time Zone at the start up.

hwclock --show
displays the hardware clock.

hwclock --systohc
adjust hardware clock to the sytem.

By the way, the name of environmental value is "TZ".

openntpd is now running as a daemon and I wonder why two processes are running. It's strange either that the openntpd seems to detect the time gap between the ntp server and local, but it doesn't adjust the time at all. ntpdate works perfect, though.

# NTP #2
カテゴリ: /server/Dan Small Linux
I discovered an article telling that /etc/apt/sources.list must be modified to make it work correctly. Per its advice, I comment-outed all the lines and add:

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ sarge main contrib non-free

apt-get update ended successfully, however, apt-get install ntp showed some errors again. I tried apt-get install ntpdate and it was successful. dtpdate was installed under /user/sbin. The expression should be:

ntpdate 211.932.200

The time was adjusted.

I found openntpd in the apt-cache result. It was also successfully installed under /user/sbin. The config file is located in /etc/openntpd. There is a shell script named openntpd in /etc/init.d. Finally got here.

Today, I'm trying to set NTP daemon to the DSL. First, I tried apt-get to download and install ntpd having thought it's the simplest way. "apt-cache ntp" listed some entries. I chose "ntp" and issued "apt-get install ntp". But it resulted in some errors telling "Failed to fetch .... "

Holy cow! Packages can't be found because the list was outdated.

I downloaded original ntpd source from www.ntp.org and tried to install it. But DSL doesn't have gcc and make.
